How it Works?

This article will provide step-by-step instructions on how to rotate a video 90 degrees within Lightworks .

Lightworks can support a wide range of video formats and codecs, which you import into Lightworks by going to Project > Add Clip. If your video is in a different format or codec, you might have to convert it beforehand with a separate application such as VLC media player .

Once the video is imported into Lightworks, it will be visible within the left hand Media Panel and divided into video and audio tracks.

To rotate a video 90 degrees:

5 Easy Steps to Rotate Videos on LightworksIf your imported video is after it has been rotated, you can skip to step 4 below. Otherwise, if there’s no rotation metadata/tag associated with your file (e.g., an mp4 video), the video will be displayed horizontally. To rotate a video 90 degrees within Lightworks, you can input ’90’ into Lift and Stamp > Rotate And Stamp > Rotate And Overwrite Encoding box. Since no other rotation metadata/tag has been found for this mp4 file, it should now appear vertically.

To rotate the video back to its original horizontal state:

Select the clip and go to Clip > Properties and uncheck the Rotate and Overwrite box. This will negate any changes you made in step 3 above.

Now, let’s say we imported a video with rotation metadata/tag associated with it (e.g., an mpeg file). Once the video is imported, you can see the rotation metadata/tag associated with it in Lift and Stamp > Rotate And Stamp > Rotate And Overwrite Encoding box.

To rotate the mpeg file 90 degrees within Lightworks , input ’90’ into Lift and Stamp > Rotate And Stamp > Rotate And  Overwrite Encoding box. Since no other rotation metadata/tag has been found for this mpeg file, it should now appear vertically.

To rotate the video back to its original horizontal state:

Select the clip and go to Clip > Properties and uncheck the Rotate and Overwrite box. This will negate any changes you made in step 5 above.

To rotate the video 90 degrees if it’s in a different format or codec, you’ll have to use an external application such as VLC media player to re-encode the video into another format prior to importing into Lightworks . To do this just open up your video in VLC media player , go to Video > Convert/Save > Save as AVI…, choose target video file location and hit the Convert/Save button.

VLC media player will then start re-encoding your video into an avi format resultant of the inputted frame size, frame rate, etc. After that is done, import the converted file into Lightworks via Project > Add Clip. Don’t forget to select the Avi codec as your target video codec (e.g., MPEG-4 (xvid)) if you choose not to use the default one or leave it as “Same as source”.

Once Lightworks has done its thing and imported the avi file, adjust the rotation settings in Lift and Stamp > Rotate And Stamp > Rotate And Overwrite Encoding as shown in steps 3 and 5 above, or follow the instructions given for mp4 files.

At any point you can switch between editing modes by going to View > Switch Editing Mode dropdown box from where you can choose from a wide range of video formats .
